Highlights
- Strong presence at the renowned Solid Freeform Fabrication (SFF) Symposium; 7 talks in 2024, up from 5 talks in the 2023 event.
- Group has been actively disseminating research findings. Over 30 publications in the last 5 year, with several garnering over 100+ citations.
- Several ongoing collaborations to push the frontier of computational design research in AM.

Notable Invited Acitivies
2026 – Guest Editor for Additively Manf. Metamaterials: from Theory to Applications in Virtual and Physical Prototyping.
2026 – Panel member at Imperial College London’s flagship AI corridor and Hackathon event.
2026 – Championed and executed a two-day thematic workshop on “Optimisation and Machine Learning” to narrow the UK skills-gap in this high-value topic. Developed educational content, e.g. Notebooks for researchers to learn complex content hands-on.
2023 – Wrote chapter titled “Simulation driven design and the role of optimisation in DfAM” for the ASM Handbook Vol 24B “Additive Manufacturing Design and Applications”.
2021 – Led and delivered a thematic event on “Computational Design Tools” (partner: EPSRC DfAM Network) with 200+ registrations. The event featured leading academic and industry experts from the UK, EU, USA, and Australia.
Leadership and Membership of Scientific Societies
2026 – Scientific Advisory Board member for the Design 2026 conference.
2025 – Co-leads the “Theory, Modelling and AI” theme within the EPSRC’s UK Metamaterials Network.
2021-24 – Key Research Theme Leader for “Computational Tools” within the EPSRC’s DfAM Network.

Celebrating Erin's Amelia Earhart Fellowship!

Our very own (Erin) Xiaochen Yu has been awarded the prestigious Zonta International Amelia Earhart Fellowship, this recognition is richly deserved, and we’re excited to see what she’ll achieve next for aerospace – and for society.
This recognition is a testament not just to Erin’s extraordinary determination and intellectual firepower, but also to the culture we are so proud to nurture here in the Department of Aeronautics (Imperial).
